If you're just now getting your collection organized, now is the perfect time to take this important step. First, snap a photo of each item in your collection. (If your collection is very extensive, you can make this process faster and easier by just laying out all the pieces on a large white sheet and snapping one photograph of everything. Just be sure that the photo is taken close enough that you can easily recognize each individual item). Next, if you still have your original purchase receipts, it's a good idea to match these up with your photographs. Then provide a copy of these items to your insurance agent. This will help your agent know what value to assign to your collection. Your agent will also be able to advise you about whether the collection's value is already covered under your regular homeowner's policy, or if it's large enough that you should consider taking out a rider policy just for the collection itself.
